Freshwater ecosystems are sentinels of the environment
Now more than ever, lakes, rivers, and wetlands face multiple threats from environmental stressors, including climate change and pollution from human activities. Of importance is the recognition of the timescale and magnitude of ecological responses to stressors. In addition, understanding the “baseline” condition of ecosystems prior to disturbance is useful for management and recovery targets. ECAB Lab research integrates a range of methods from aquatic ecology, biological monitoring, and paleolimnology to understand the effects of human activities and natural processes on the structure and function of freshwater resources.
The current focus of ECAB Lab research includes:
Understanding lake ecosystem response to long-term environmental changes and legacy contaminants
Advancing knowledge on emerging environmental stressors in eastern Canada
